Laminate Floor Installation – 10 Rules For Installing Laminates In Bathrooms

Kitchen Installations

Laminate floor installations have evolved to such an extent that even bathrooms and kitchens are no longer too much of a challenge for this interior design idea. Provided that you follow installation instructions closely, a do it yourself enthusiast can confidently create a brand new bathroom look in the space of a few hours.

What should you keep in mind when doing a laminate floor installation in a bathroom or kitchen?

Many suppliers are reluctant to recommend a laminate floor installation in a bathroom, because of the moisture risk involved. However, most quality laminate flooring products are now highly resistant to water and warranted for use during bathroom and kitchen remodeling projects. The only caveat is that you don’t deviate from the detailed installation instructions. This is one area where you may want to consider calling in professional help.

1. Shower Floor No-No: Never attempt a laminate flooring installation in an area with a floor drain, such as a shower floor. This type of flooring also isn’t recommended for use in a steam room, due to the extremely high humidity level.

2. Water Woes: The main culprit that leads to floor damage such as buckling or blistering, is standing water. If there is any spillage or overflow, it is vital that you dry the floor immediately. Cleaning a laminate floor should never involve more than a damp mop. A wet wash is a straight road to trouble.

3. Ultimate Underlay: In a bathroom or kitchen you need to cut the underlayment even with the top of the flooring after installation, so that it can be sealed with the floor.

4. Joint Joinery: The tighter the joints lock during a laminate flooring installation, the better their ability to resist moisture. Don’t manipulate the joints too much. Every time they are loosened and re-locked, they will have a looser fit. This has to be avoided at all costs during bathroom and kitchen installations.

5. Glued To The Task: You may not need to do this in the rest of the house, but manufacturers recommend that in bathrooms and kitchens you glue the joints to seal them properly. Apply the glue to the top of the tongue only. As you click the joints together, a thin bead of glue will show on the surface. This must be wiped off with a damp cloth, before the glue dries. This procedure is only necessary during a bathroom or kitchen laminate flooring installation.

6. Setting The Seal: Around the perimeter of the room you will use 100% mildew-resistant silicone caulk or a product such as Pergo sealant according to the manufacturer’s directions. One tip that is often given is to apply masking tape parallel to and just off the edge of the laminate plank. You can then fill the expansion space, remove any overflow carefully with a putty knife and gently remove the tape. Every joint and expansion space must be protected in this way to prevent moisture and humidity from seeping into the core of the planks used during the laminate flooring installation.

7. Trimming The Tub: A variety of decorative color-coordinated molding options are available for use around tubs and basins. The expansion space first needs to be filled with caulk. The molding trim can then be placed in the caulk while it is still wet. The joint between the tub or basin also needs to be treated with caulk.

8. Mind The Moldings: Always use a T-molding between the bathroom and the adjoining area. This will also be sealed with caulk.

9. Do A Dry Run: A bathroom laminate flooring installation is slightly different due to the use of caulk and glue. Manufacturers therefore recommend that you leave the room to dry for up to 24 hours before using it.

10. Cabinets Come First: Install any bathroom of kitchen cabinets before doing the laminate flooring installation.

Remember that any laminate flooring that is damp or wet becomes extremely slippery. Be extra careful in a bathroom. All in all, if done with care and the requisite sealants, a bathroom laminate flooring installation can be most successful and durable.

Top 10 Tips for Choosing your Designer Kitchen

Kitchen Installations

Taking the first steps to a major home improvement is a seemingly overwhelming task for the uninitiated. With so many options and how to go about getting the finished result is similar to peering into an abyss of the unknown. This, coupled with uncertainty about how well your chosen team of designers and fitters will finish your project can bring many a sleepless night. As one of the major refurbishments of any home is the kitchen area, here are a few rules of thumb to ensure you get your dream kitchen.

Take your time to REALLY think about how you want to use your kitchen. The stronger your criteria for the kitchen, the less likely you will be to have uncertainty about how well the finished kitchen design will work for you.

Draw up some key aesthetic requirements. Are you looking for a traditional kitchen or a contemporary kitchen design? Do you want a painted kitchen or would you prefer the look of wood surfaces such as oak or walnut cabinetry? Would you like a mixture of the two, for example an American Walnut cabinetry feature opposite a white high gloss kitchen run? Don’t worry about this pigeon-holing you – it’s for the designer to take these principles and expand on them to make it work.

Research your appliances. You’re going to be using these the most, so make sure they do what you want. If you require a professional kitchen, then concentrate on the brands that cater for finer control of the cooking. Don’t be fooled by the huge array of automatic functions – the majority of these, whilst clever, won’t necessarily ever be used by those who know how to cook already. The choice of hob – induction, gas or ceramic is a key item as it will have an impact on the installation.

Choose your kitchen designer wisely. You must get on with your kitchen designer. This is a very personal project with large investment from yourself so your relationship must be as smooth as possible. Whilst budget is always a strict consideration, do not sit down with the first one that comes to hand. Ask a few searching questions to ensure that your initial criteria is met with a reassuring understanding rather than a vacant nod of the head.

Don’t always queue up at Big Brand Names. Don’t automatically assume that the larger companies can give you the best prices. A lot of the time they have significant overheads to cover or the manufacturing is a lot cheaper in order to offer bargain prices. They also see customers as quick turnaround, which becomes very impersonal and won’t necessarily deal with any smaller, personal details you may want to implement.

Investigate smaller kitchen design teams. Bespoke kitchen designers have an immediate tag of being out of league of ‘normal’ kitchen customers. Whilst this is certainly the case with some, this does not apply to many. Whilst they will still be able to supply you with much the same type of cabinetry as the big boys, they will do so on a much more one-to-one basis with the ability to fine-tune and scrutinize your kitchen design a lot better.

What worktops are you looking for? There are a multitude of kitchen worktops from natural stone to manmade quartz or seamless worktops such as Corian. Be aware that there are drawbacks that may not be presented to you by the designer. For example, glass worktops are fantastic but will be a nightmare if you use the kitchen and can’t stand fingerprints. If you put a hot pan on to Corian, it will melt a ring into it. Do NOT use marble or limestone as these are highly porous and only work in a kitchen that is there to look pretty or in an area that is not intended for heavy use.

Get the lighting right. The lighting needs to work hand in hand with the kitchen layout. Most larger chains won’t be involved in this, which is where a smaller company may integrate the lighting plan alongside the cabinetry.

Check the small print. Make a checklist of EVERYTHING including small details such as decorative wall sockets, internal wirework. Most importantly, check that you have all drawer organizing systems you need i.e. cutlery inserts, plate stackers, herb holders etc. There is a storage solution for almost anything but these can be a hidden extra. Hidden extras are horrible when you think you’ve covered everything and still have to fork out more money.

Be patient. No decent kitchen installation should ever be rushed.  For galley kitchens or larger bespoke kitchens, allow two to three weeks for cabinetry installation, then a week to two for stone templating and installation (if that’s what is being installed). Only then can the tap, sink etc be tightened up and you can start enjoying it!”

How to Remodel Your Kitchen And Still Have Money For Groceries

Kitchen Installations

Pop quiz. Which TV personality would be more at home in your kitchen: Candice Olson from the HGTV show “Divine Design”, or Carole Brady from “The Brady Bunch”? Now, if you honestly love your gold laminated counter tops and linoleum floor, than just put on your bell bottoms and cook up a nice cheese fondue on your avocado green stove. But if your heart is yearning for stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops, a kitchen remodel is definitely the way to go. But you say “I can’t afford to remodel my kitchen”, and the we say “tosh”, an affordable kitchen remodel is simply a matter of making a few informed choices about materials and design. Here are the pointers you can use to stay on budget, and send the avocado green back to 1974 where it belongs.

1. Granite Counter Tops. Nothing says “new kitchen” faster than granite counter tops. Or marble, or soapstone, or any number of natural stone counter tops. The problem is that natural stone has to come out of the ground and be transported to your new kitchen. The larger the slab of stone, the harder (ie. more expensive) it is to excavate it and transport it in one piece. But you can still indulge in the luxury of natural stone countertops if you are willing to install the stone in pieces. Just purchase small squares of granite and have them installed by your tile installer. Choose a grout color that matches the stone as closely as possible and you may even be able to achieve the visual effect of a solid counter top. As an added benefit, if you damage one square of tile, it can be easily replaced without incurring the expense of replacing the entire counter top.

2. Stone Backsplash. A kitchen backsplash does more than keep fingerprints and chili stains off your walls, it also provides one more opportunity to accessorize your kitchen with contemporary kitchen finishes. Of course, the most elegant finish for your new stone counter tops would be a new stone backsplash. But as we have already discussed, granite and other natural stone tiles are expensive, as compared to a standard ceramic tile backsplash. One trick is to turn your stone tiles on their side, so you are creating a diamond pattern instead of the standard horizontal row of tiles. The diamond pattern looks expensive, but actually requires fewer tiles than the horizontal pattern.

3. Custom Kitchen Cabinets. While your heart may yearn for custom kitchen cabinetry in your new kitchen, remodeling your kitchen on a budget may require to ditch the site-built kitchen cabinets and use standard factory built cabinets. One trick that kitchen designers use is to install factory made cabinets, but to vary the height of the cabinets. By using a few 42″ kitchen cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling, with a mix of standard 36″ cabinets, you can create visual interest and the illusion of custom cabinetry. Or, if you are splurging on 42″ cabinets for the entire kitchen, skip the expensive options like matching crown molding, and ask your trim carpenter to pick up some poplar crown molding at the local lumber yard, stain it to match your cabinets, and install it on site. This method is usually cheaper in the long run than ordering the fancy trim pieces from the cabinet manufacturer. Your carpenter can even fabricate the look of intricate moldings by layering a couple different simple moldings together.

One last trick. Remember that lighting goes a long way toward the overall effect of your kitchen. Installing three small hanging pendant lights over your kitchen island is can be less expensive than splurging on one large kitchen light fixture, and definitely cheaper than installing an entire gang of recessed lights.

By looking at each component of your kitchen remodel and asking “how can I do this cheaper without cheapening my kitchen?” you can pull your poor dated kitchen out of the 1970′s and into the new millennium where it belongs. Candice Olson would be proud.

Fitted Kitchen Cost: How To Save Money

Kitchen Installations

Fitted kitchen cost is something to think about when you are looking to remodel your kitchen. A fitted kitchen will give you the chance to walk around in a complete mock up of your dream kitchen to see what it would be like to work in it. They can also be installed in full, which saves a lot of time and effort. Nonetheless, they can be very expensive. With this said, there are on a good note a number of things that you can do to cut down on your fitted kitchen cost, which adds even more benefit to using them.

One of the first ways to cut down on your fitted kitchen cost is to shop around for the best deal possible. This is true for whatever you are looking to purchase, whether it be a fitted kitchen or food. You should never commit to the first quote given to you. Shop around and speak with various vendors to take a full account of what is available on the market. This will in turn help you to get the best fitted kitchen cost for what you are able to afford.

The next way to cut down on your fitted kitchen cost is to remove any appliances and accessories that are not necessary. When you are shopping around for a fitted kitchen, most vendors will include optional accessories in the first quote. These accessories may include extra storage, appliances, or other items that you may not have room for or may not even need, and they will all add to your fitted kitchen cost. You need to make sure that you look at everything on your contract in detail with the vendor and get rid of all items that are not needed or will not be utilized.

Where accessories are concerned, you can shop for small appliances on your own to cut down on your fitted kitchen cost. Discounted appliances can be located at many retail outlets.

You can also cut down on your fitted kitchen cost by considering using a different model. While a certain modern model that has stainless steel appliances, double gas ovens, an under the counter water filter and more may be appealing, it is also contains too high a fitted kitchen cost for most people. You need to make sure that you go through all of the options in a line that a vendor has available before settling on anything. You will most likely very well find a model that substantially cuts down on your fitted kitchen cost that you are very happy with.

To minimize your Fitted Kitchen Costs, you should also contract with the vendor to have it installed for you. Most times, when you have an additional vendor install the kitchen in place of the contractor that you originally used, your fitted kitchen cost will be higher overall. The new vendor will tend to charge more than the original one to install the kitchen, an aspect which adds to your fitted kitchen cost. This is since many vendors will install their kitchens at a discounted rate because the vast majority of their fitted kitchen cost mark up occurs with the equipment.

In addition to what was discussed above, the Internet is a great source for locating additional ways to cut down on your fitted kitchen cost. You can accomplish this by going to one of the major search engines and typing in the keywords fitted kitchen cost. You will be surprised on how much information is available on this topic.

In conclusion, fitted kitchen cost is a big concern if you are looking to have a fitted kitchen installed in your home. Fortunately, there are many ways that you can cut down on your fitted kitchen cost.

Cramped kitchen converted into luxurious and practical living space

Kitchen Installations

Jonathan and Victoria Bullock desperately needed to revamp their old kitchen to make it suitable for modern family life.

The couple’s home is a large barn conversion from the 70s and their old-fashioned kitchen was poorly laid out, had no dining area, and was small in comparison to all the other rooms.

“When we bought the house we always intended to extend and replace the kitchen,” said Jonathan.

“With a young family, we spend a lot of time in the kitchen area and wanted a dining space and sitting area – so we decided to open up the existing rooms and extend to create a more usable space.

“Our old kitchen resembled a room in a caravan. We knew it needed a makeover.”

After adding an extension, the couple commissioned Kitchen Design Centre to create a modern kitchen design to fit in with their family orientated lifestyle.

The area that used to be the kitchen became a dining and seating area and the new extension became a contemporary open plan kitchen.

Now extremely spacious, the room has light pouring in through the tri-fold patio doors and large windows.

A 4m “island” was constructed for the centre piece of the designer kitchen, creating the perfect preparation area and storage space.

Fitted with the latest cutting-edge technology, the modern kitchen boasts a combination microwave, oven, coffee machine, warming drawers, induction hobs, integrated fridge, freezer and dishwasher and a 100 degrees Quooker hot tap.

Suzanne, designer at Kitchen Design Centre’s Manchester showroom, said: “We helped Victoria and Jonathan tackle all the decisions in a logical order, and eventually end up with their ideal kitchen.

“We went through the plans, and supplied them with 3D images of how the kitchen would look. These images really helped Victoria and Jonathan visualise how the kitchen would be in reality.”

Given plenty of time to consider the options, and with the guiding hand of Suzanne, the couple now have their dream designer kitchen installed.

“We love our new kitchen,” said Jonathan. “My advice is to find a designer and fitter that you really get on with.

“Planning and fitting a designer kitchen is a long process and there is a lot to consider – so you need someone you trust to give you the best advice.”

Kitchen Design Centre provides kitchens Manchester, kitchens Colne and kitchens Blackburn.
